That said, read carefully the Section 13 of the Judiciary Act of 1789.

And Chief Justice and President are distant cousins who hate each other. This little legal battle is a microcosm of the larger factional rivalry they are part of.

Before he became Secretary of State, the lawyer who is now representing the petitioner against the federal government (i.e., Former Attorney General in the last administration) served as Acting Secretary of State.

To further complicate the situation, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was the Secretary of State during the last administration who failed to deliver the very commission (thus causing this legal battle).

Coincidentally, Attorney General was in fact Acting Secretary of State in this administration before the current Secretary of State took over, so he should have been in charge of the pending commission at the time.

The problem is that one commission from the last administration has not been delivered and is still pending. The State Department is in charge of it, but Secretary of State is adamant that he has no intention of getting it done. Here, he is merely the alter ego of the sitting President.

To be privileged to live contemporaneously with great political leaders and brilliant political theorists in the same community is perhaps not something to be envied, but to be pitied. But perhaps therein lie some genuine pleasures too.

Now that I am thinking about it, my resistance and abhorrence to the culture of calling each other “Dr.” at work (the worst being referring to oneself as Dr. XX) is due largely to your influence!
