A childhood favorite, and 2 decades later I was catching new jokes! Not just regarding adult humor, but also understated reoccurring bits like Arthur consistently confusing the numbers 3 and 5.

In 2019 I spent a year doing live shows at Universal Studios Osaka. Including a One Piece stage combat show, where I was the first actor of non-Japanese descent to play Monkey D Luffy onstage at the park.

We started with severe character overload. In classic shonen fashion, being unwilling to kill off or conclude characters gave nobody room for development, reducing regulars to one-liners.

Thought it was kinda bad! The actors were more talented than the script they were given. It wanted to be all at once earnest and a parody, and also a spy movie plus a fantasy movie. And I think it spread itself too thin to succeed strongly at any of those goals.

I could only recommend this to die hard HxH fans and people who enjoy ridiculously swingy, broken fighting games. I am both of those things so I’m having fun. Touch-of-death combos have never felt so easy and I’m treating this as training wheels for other fighters.

It’s fun and light from start to finish. And what I appreciate now that I didn’t as a teenager is that you can tell the actors are having a great time with everything. Proudly a feel-good, silly viewing experience which is needed sometimes.

So fun from start to finish. Funny and relentlessly high energy while still having a poignant and thoughtful enough story that makes me glad kids are growing up watching it.
