Maths tutor, examiner, ex-school teacher. Love digging into what students are thinking and fixing misconceptions.
What is this sorcery?!
Had a great get-together with my team on maths. Even found time to discuss different methods.
It reminded me of a method to factorise a monic quadratic without having to magic up two numbers. One of my previous year 12 students loved it as it took the guesswork away.

Very proud of this. Juggling everything AND my part-time degree is a lot but so satisfying. Looking forward to the next course! #OUresults #OU

I know Edexcel are catching some heat at the moment but I had to deal with their ActiveLearn website which didn't want me to register. Had to ring up to get it sorted and their customer service was fantastic. Problem solved, and two side problems solved as well. Really helpful.

And here’s a great example. The researchers state that the AI tools ‘generate valid references’ because- and this is WILD- ‘although some of the references did not exist, the percentage of valid references generated was more than those that were hallucinated.’ THIS IS NOT A STANDARD, FOLKS.

Don Steward's Small Data Set Averages Problems

There's something about how the top rows develop in challenge that is glorious.

I've never taught averages without using them.

They pair excellently with @studymaths.bsky.social's mathsbot.com/manipulative...

When I said "isn't it easier to add 10 in your head than 9?", she replied "yes but it's just common sense" as if somehow we had left the realm of maths. 2/2

Interesting push-back from a tutee today when I wanted to talk about doing '+10 - 1' instead of '+9' (because they currently add using their fingers and I want to widen their repertoire). 1/2

"If I get stuck, I'll just ask AI for help."

I wouldn't recommend it!

I Googled the Parma Marathon today. Here is the AI summary.

It was a joy to attend #MathsConf38. Life as a tutor can be lonely, no colleagues to observe or bounce ideas off and it was lovely to be among like-minded others. Thank you all.
