Love the Santa Clause analogy for the Standard Language Ideology: “these are a man-made phenomenon, and therefore they are not fixed. They are not divine, and we can do something about it. We don’t have to just accept this. We can question this. We can mold this ourselves.”

Life in U.S. monolinguistan: When people overhear you speak German with your child and are proudly commenting on how they’ve noticed that you have an “accent”. Dude, this is not me pretending to speak English, it’s another LANGUAGE!
