How well do classifiers trained on visual activity actually transfer to non-visual reactivation?

#Decoding studies often rely on training in one (visual) condition and applying it to another (e.g. rest-reactivation). However: How well does this work? Show us what makes it work and win up to 1000$!

Predict which words participants were hearing, based upon brain activity recordings of visually seeing these items?

IF YOU CAN, REPLACE TABLE() WITH TABULATE() IN YOUR #rstats CODE!

data <- sample(1:3, 100, replace = TRUE)
microbenchmark::microbenchmark(table(data), tabulate(data), times = 10000)

I'm almost angry at how much faster this is, and why I was today years old when I learned this 🤬

"Nagel" ist German for "nail", which is why this is the first GIF to pop up, once again reminding me how lucky I was to be able to assimilate my husband's last name.

preprint alert 🚨
1/ Can we accurately detect sequential replay in humans using Temporally Delayed Linear Modelling (#TDLM)? In our recent study, we could not find any replay and decided to dig deeper by running a hybrid simulation with surprising results. Link to preprint & details below 👇

It's bonkers that in academic science we spend hours obsessing over the wording of a paper, but often only one person has seen the code that produced the results! 2/N

This is so beautiful 😍
I'm pleased to announce the release of scales 1.4.0 for #rstats. While scales mainly exists to serve #ggplot2, this release packs a bunch of improvements that is good to be aware of.

Now online: The Science Barometer 2024! It shows long-term trends and makes it clear what citizens think about academic freedom in Germany. Citizens were asked about scenarios that could prevent scientists from speaking freely about their research.

Check out our preprint "Sleep Links Gist Abstraction to Veridical Memory"!

Summary 🧵:

Sleep benefits memory and it reorganizes it. It integrates new and pre-existing memories, and extracts gist across episodes. However, extracting gist might generate false memories.

Best way to find a typo in a paper is to read the draft carefully 100 times, print it, mark it up, submit it, get it accepted, have copy editors review it, read it again, finalize it, get it published, and then proudly share it will all of your close colleagues

I have a lot of these fake signal update notes in my timeline ('Hidden "invite random journalist" button moved to avoid accidental traps'). And yes, I DO get the joke and think it's funny, but I wanted to point out that the ACTUAL signal update notes are funny as well.

Quiz: What will the following #rstats code do?

iris %>%
ggplot(aes(x = Species, y = Sepal.Width)) +
geom_jitter(width = .25) +
theme_classic()

Jitter the points along ...
a) ... the x-axis
b) ... the y-axis
c) ... both the x- and y-axis

🧵 for the solution!

R and RStudio are tied together so tightly that some people don't know they're separate, very different things. If you teach, please tell your students the difference between a programming language and an editor. And when you write papers, report the R version, and not (only) the RStudio version!
