Under the avenue of trees in Shakespeare's churchyard, a couple were chasing falling leaves, and I couldn't help joining in.

Dickens's novels were big on social commentary, often in a heavy and caricatured way. Kingsolver deftly weaves on her social commentary and points of history in a way that's beautiful to behold. I'm learning so much from this novel.

I'm sure I'll have lots more to say about this one, but the first is - oh boy, does it have a voice. A friend says she didn't get past the first few pages, and I think a strong voice can take some getting used to. But this one is full of personality - and makes sense.

Now reading this in a lovely spot! It's told in the first person as a letter, so there's a distance between the time of the events and the time of narration, with plenty of foreshadowing. The narrator can pause and address the recipient of her letter, and philosophise. Beautiful.

Some stunning comparisons in this one. A character has just put their drab clothes in a wardrobe next to some colourful ones, and it was 'like I had just put mashed potato on a fruit salad'. I love being surprised like that!

This one works for the sheer personality in the writing voice. And the protagonist is an anti-hero, with the story defying many of the usual expectations. Sometimes I had no idea what his comparisons were supposed to mean, though. Be creative, but stay this side of weird!

If you want a good example of an omniscient narrator, try this one. The narrator is separate from the characters, commenting on the setting and the people, and giving their own perspective. An omniscient narrator can move (gently) between characters' heads. It's uncommon nowadays.

I love historical drama, especially where I learn about real events. Harris's writing is sensitive and descriptive, but he does switch between people's heads in a slightly unsettling way. If you're going to switch, ease the focus gently away from one person and towards another.

My hubby: six days in hospital, one major orthopaedic surgery, one ambulance ride, and seen by multiple professionals in hospital, at home and in outpatients. Equipment loaned, drugs prescribed. We have no insurance. Cost to us: £0.

Looks like it's Albert Einstein day. We love him in this house because he was probably autistic and left school with no qualifications. There's also this ❤️
