As far as the Shandling casting, at the time, Larry Sanders was the peak of smart, sophisticated comedy. Garry even got a Golden Globe nomination for acting. Based on his earlier success with Whoopi, I think Mike thought he could bring out the comic's hidden layers. He was so wrong on all fronts.

As Nichols' on-set assistant for it, I can confirm that any deeper meaning you valiantly tried to wring out of the film was unintended. The truth is after the failure of Primary Colors, Mike foolishly wanted to replicate the success of The Birdcage with another bawdy farce with a heartfelt ending.

I loved the CW for quoting the Parents Television Council on the Gossip Girl posters.
