Two WGN (Chicago) news headlines on the evening of 11/14/2024 read “Whooping Cough spikes in McHenry County suburbs” and “Trump taps RFK, Jr. to lead HHS.” This illustrates one feature of authoritarian regimes: the elevation of idiots, crooks, and degenerates to the centers of power. An authoritarian demands fealty to the leader, not the people, and the only people that fit the bill are idiots, crooks, and degenerates.
