A Bear Called Otter
@jrtheotterbear.bsky.social
Geeky Gen X bear, married to an amazing geeky wolf. Trying to put some joy in the world. Amateur VA. Babbler about cooking, baking, baking shows, horror movies, audio dramas, actual-plays, TTRPGs, and sometimes hiking.
But all these films are worth watching and worth talking about. They're all fun, they all do different things with the base ideas, and they're all interesting features in film history.

But with issues like that to address, it's no surprise that this group of movies runs the gamut from emotionally powerful art to glorious camp to... somewhat tediously stupid (IMHO)

Other notables: @randomhorror9.bsky.social E108; lots of episodes of The Bloody Pit and Monsters and Magazines; and the always reliable @horrorqueers.bsky.social E135 and E359. Mostly everyone talks about the first film and Bride.

Any Frankenstein story is, among other things, an existential confrontation of creation, purpose, life and death. And as with any existential examination, sooner or later it deals in the absurd.

I already had a *mortgage* with a guy who would dump me months later because I was young and *dumb* (and working at an Olive Garden lol)

My brother said to me "so if you're not going to go to Hollywood and make movies, here's where you take the civil service test..."

I mentioned Lisa Frankenstein (2024, Zelda Williams) back in March, but didn't get into details. It's funny, it's what you think it is, and it's beautifully produced. Have fun with it!

Things play out in a ridiculous bumper car ride of absurd chances and missteps. That is life, I think. Not every film gets that balance of dumb luck and dumb decisions right. Inside does. It's an extreme horror film, so there's not much in the way of luck. Just horrible, horrible consequence. (2/2)

Flesh for Frankenstein (1973, Paul Morrissey) is a wild ride that everyone should go on at least once. I can't really explain this to you, just give it a shot. After all, if you want to understand death, you have to fuck life in the gall-bladder.

And Frankenstein's Monster's Monster: Frankenstein is worth watching (it's a short-film) if only to be reminded that within every TV or movie star beats the heart of a theatre-kid.

And I really must insist that you check out Frankenstein vs. Baragon and the follow-up War of the Gargantuas to see what Japan does with our stitched-together friend. Excellent coverage by @derekbgayle.bsky.social and @ickybooley.bsky.social on the Skreeonk podcast via

I'll talk about a few sets of the films in separate posts, but a few stand-alone works need mentioning:

The one-man show Frankenstein by @jamescswanton.bsky.social is a fascinating exploration of the full story from the mind of the Creation, a great one to visit right after re-reading the novel.

I thinking about Frankenstein I re-read the book, dug up some of the original plays, watched approximately 30 films, and listened to lots and lots of podcasts.

Nooooo! I'm going to cry about this season ending all the way into 2026.

Ooooh, to be able to have that first viewing again!

This was a fun little ride. But was I the only one who up until the very end thought the whole thing was just a bad trip? I felt like a lot of the puzzling decisions really were just there to make us wonder if what we were seeing was really happening or just hallucinations.
