And also this one, bc it turns out anger rumination (at least in a college sample measured with the ARS), also ends up zero-inflated and looking like a count variable. This was all part of the nerdiest, long-distance crafts night possible with @clearlab.bsky.social 😆 #stats #PsychSciSky

I drew this 10 years ago, when
modeling a lot of zero-inflated poisson models (common for behaviors where a chunk of the sample are total abstainers), to explain it to non stats-y folks. Technically I think this is a hurdle model, since the distributions should overlap slightly, but close enough.

Felt really good, in the grander context of everything feeling so terrible, to be part of the energized crowd marching around the statehouse in Providence. Feels even better seeing millions of people showing up across the county in spite of right-wing and state sanctioned violence. #nokings

Learning about Adaptive Leadership with Vidhya Prakash, MD. Interesting and interactive presentation that really dug into what it means to lead and how to do around complex topics. 4/x

As someone with chronic illness/invisible disability, I so appreciate platforming @diekmanmdjd.bsky.social and this topic. These issues are so (ironically) under acknowledged and often poorly supported in medicine, which can trickle down to inadequate understanding/support for patients too. 3/x

Loving the first talk by Anne Beal, MD/MPH on getting what you want and need out of your career in medicine, with a TON of valuable nuanced, practical, and savvy insights to consider. 2/x

More conference happenings to look forward to—I’ll be presenting data from our ongoing study on menstrually-related exacerbation #PME of borderline personality disorder #BPD at the Int Soc for Study of Personality Disorders #ISSPD2025 in Boston! Between this and ABCT, November will be a busy month!

Amidst all the badness, still super excited to present a ticketed workshop with @clearlab.bsky.social and Jackie Ross on the menstrual cycle at #ABCT2025 @abctnow.bsky.social this fall in New Orleans!

(Decisions on talks/posters still to come.)

Haven’t posted about this much here, but I’m an avid native plant gardener. This American Painted Lady butterfly who visited yesterday right next to a patch of pussytoes, one of the few plants their caterpillars can eat, is why. Having nature right outside my door is incredible.

Bird flu makes this a great time to destroy the NIH, CDC, FDA, etc—all so people can have cheaper eggs.

Amsterdam does cold and gray with charm and light.

Andy and I went to the excellent Verzets (WWII Resistance) Museum in Amsterdam yesterday, 1/20/25. It hit hard anyway (especially as a grandchild of survivors), but felt all the more distressingly salient given events in the US. I cried. Andy summarizes some of the key takeaways we had below.

Going to Amsterdam/Utrecht to be the faculty opponent on @amdoornweerd.bsky.social’s dissertation and give a talk on new findings from our lab on hormones and mood in adolescents! My wife Andy is tagging along, in style. I’ve been before, many years ago; she hasn’t. Can’t wait—NL recs welcome!! 🇳🇱

Our dog Saku just realized I now have a space heater in my (otherwise would be freezing) home office and is suddenly very interested in joining the research team.

I’m the aforementioned native plant nerd wife of @fuckingexhausted.bsky.social :) Grass/sedge faves include little bluestem (pictured), bottlebrush grass, plantain-leaved sedge, and (if you’ve got space for something taller/larger) switchgrass. And violets will spread and are easy to transplant!

Personally, I’m sporting these, since my E and O are pretty much topped out, which will surprise absolutely no one I actually know much at all.

Possibly the flip side of that, sensitivity to ovulatory surges in E2 often results in greater happiness and wellbeing; however, for some, this increased positive affect/reward sensitivity can facilitate substance misuse, risky behavior, and other forms of positive urgency. 7/🧵
November 11, 2024 at 3:48 AM
In contrast, sensitivity to decreasing E2 tends to cause depressive symptoms, increased suicidality, fatigue, concentration difficulties that may onset a little later and often persist into menses and sometimes even beyond. We discuss possible dopaminergic mechanisms. 6/🧵
November 11, 2024 at 3:48 AM
These include sensitivity to post-ovulatory surges in ALLO (a metabolite of progesterone), most typically linked to increased hypersensitivity and irritability—timing varies, but tends to improve by/with the start of menses. Potential GABAergic and serotonergic mechnisms. 5/🧵
