PFP - A man in a t-shirt & ball cap sits on a log facing the water on a beach. Next to him a bike leans against a palm tree.
Loved owning a bike from a local place. One of their marketing people was our first cat sitter when we moved to Seattle and they were in a tiny showroom on Market in Ballard.

Thanks! Forwarded this to all my Radpower riding friends. This really sucks. I knew they were probably going out of business, but figured we could just use the bike till some non-replaceable OEM part broke. Didn't know "battery might explode" would be the reason. Got 5 years out of it, at least.

Thanks for the heads up. One of these is sitting in my apt, (detached from the bike) & unplugged from the charger, while I'm in FL till next Monday. Cool to find out I'm gonna have to spend $600 to replace it unless I want a bricked e-bike, & not sure if I should bother with Radpower's situation.

Flew thru Orly a few years ago, & my gf and I had the same complaint, until we saw mini wine bottles in one of the shops. We asked the cashier if we could drink this at the gate, looked at us like we were idiots. Meaning, yes, we could drink straight from the bottle waiting for our flight.

Hope there’s still a good run going in two weeks, the soonest I can get there. Riding a city bus to watch stand a few feet away from a salmon run like I’m living in a NatGeo doc is so cool.

If memory serves, the reaction tended to be a kind of puzzled 'Huh, interesting." It’s brain melting that the takeaway turned out to be that we should build more faux Main Street malls instead of just reviving actual Main Streets. And non-car ways to access them.

There’s a bit in Geography of Nowhere where the author visits one of these types of places, (might have been Main Street USA in Disney?) and prompts some of the happy people walking around to explain what they like about it. Nobody can put a finger on it, until he points out “There’s no cars here.”

If I accidentally allow it to enter my thoughts that it hasn’t even been a year, I‘m down for like the next 15 minutes, just brain fog.

Shut & bar the door behind you, pull up the ladder after you've climbed it, even tho you weren't the one who built the ladder. Funny how so many people see themselves as the secret ingredient that was missing from a community until they showed up instead of just additional 'traffic and congestion."

Bonus points if you are also manscaping while in your mancave.

But really this just sounds like the people arguing against M4A in 2010, the idea that people get sick on purpose. If insurance was "free" (lol) people would go out an intentionally hurt themselves because, YOLO? Or just make unnecessary doctor appts because we all love going to the doctor?

This is stupid, but also; I have a friend who gets money off his work sponsored insurance if he hits 10k daily steps, tracked via a Fitbit. Know other people who are incentivized, for like going to the gym, etc. "Tell me you've never paid for your own insurance without telling me . . ."

The unkillable myth of "Human Resources." It took me way to long into adult employment to understand HR exists to protect the company and the executives, not the employees.

They conceded to that at least.

Ha. Took my 3 nephews to Culvers around that age. It was a balmy 15F, so perfect t-shirt & shorts weather. I said they had to bring but could just carry their coats in the car, but they had to wear them into Culvers b/c I was not dealing with the judgment from all the senior ladies on duty.

I think I came to JMC via the Pixies cover of Head On and then went backwards from there. Lucky for me, my roommate loved them too, so Psychocandy was in very heavy rotation in my freshman dorm room in 1993.

My original opposition to the death penalty was 100% "Murder by the state is wrong. Full Stop" and that's still true but there are times where it weakens to "well, the insurmountable issue is it would and could never be applied fairly and equally."
November 13, 2025 at 12:30 AM
30 years ago in my Moral Philosophy 101 class, my friend and I were the only two people (in a lecture hall) to raise our hands in opposition to the death penalty. The old cliche that people's views get more conservative as they get older . . . I'm thinking about that for no reason at all right now.

It was a simple pleasure he had denied himself. Maybe because he had to (or only thought he had to) as part of his cover. Maybe because he was always "too busy" and just never prioritized it to make time. I think about that all the time and wonder what my own "hockey(s)" is/are.

There’s a scene (I might be misremembering) in The American’s after Philip “retires” from being a Russian spy where he’s going out the door with his son carrying hockey gear and Elizabeth asks him what he’s doing, and he says( somewhat defiantly) something like “I’m going to play some hockey.”

My risk averse, moderate Dem 83yo Mom was ok not seeing me & my bro (& being alone) on Thanksgiving cause we couldn’t fly if it meant people had healthcare. I had 2 flights cxld this week but that’s small beans compared to people dying. And they just caved. Burn these mfers to the ground.

Compassion without pity. A name for a feeling I’ve probably thought of as empathy in the past, but more like a cousin to it, a more precise description. Time to reevaluate some memories. And a new way to go forward. It’s weird how putting the right words to things can change them so.
