Political ecological economy of climate change and energy transitions • Postdoc at the University of Copenhagen

Together with @peternewell.bsky.social, I have a new paper out in RIPE.

In this paper, we explore why and how the use of fossil hydrocarbons for non-energy purposes (as raw material for synthetics) changes how we should approach the climate crisis.

Ever wondered why there is no accessible book-length introduction to ecological economics and the political economy of transitions in Danish?

I know I have, so I tried to write one. It is out tomorrow, asking how we analytically should approach whether it is too little, too late and who benefits.

Why is it that capping the production of plastics is so contested?

Got to provide some input to this great piece by @katharinamau.bsky.social

Interesting developments... The contradiction on which the initiative is founded could not be contained.
Shell, Aker BP, and Enbridge have all quit the expert advisory group of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) because the draft standards for net zero require them to refrain from developing new oil and gas fields and significantly reduce their oil and gas production. 🙄
‘Net zero’ emissions standard paused as Shell quits

Gaza is now single deadliest conflict for journalists in history.

This is not only an attempt to extinguish a whole people, it is also an attempt to extinguish the story of their genocide.

The IEA has published its yearly report on the state of oil—a key publication when following trends in petrochemicals and oil as a material.

It confirms the increasing importance of synthetics in energy transitions: "Demand growth [is] underpinned almost exclusively by petrochemical[s]."

Just learnt that the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change is now also calling for a climate agenda beyond decarbonisation, including both defossilisation and detoxification.

Going to carefully read this new paper on Shell's 2023 petrochemical plant in Pennsylvania:

"The plant might best be understood as a $1.65 billion government subsidy to the fossil fuel industry shrouded behind discourses of economic revitalization and low-carbon futures."

This interesting new paper models some of the dilemmas of defossilising petrochemicals and plastics around biomass as feedstock and the associated land use change.

The overlap of decarbonisation and defossilisation puts nature under further pressure without degrowth.

The links between fossil fuels, geoeconomics, and synthetic materials are on full display in multilateral environmental governance.
The dynamics behind the collapse of the global plastics talks are similar to the continued resistance against transitioning away from fossil fuels we saw at the latest climate COP

As the IEA put it in their Oil 2024 report, we live in an "era of petrochemical-driven [oil] demand growth."

In the absence of a treaty with a supply-side focus to address production, this era continues.
And there we have it, folks. Saudi Arabia, Russia & Kuwait successfully block plastic production curbs.

“If we address plastic pollution, there should be no problem with producing plastics,” said Saudi delegate. “The problem is pollution itself, not plastics.”

The plastics crisis, subject to multilateral negotiation this week, is not a matter of straws, stirrers, plastic cutlery, and carrier bags. They account for 0.04% of use (in the UK).

The crisis, rather, is about maintaining fossil fuel hegemony beyond energy.
