The SUS-POL research programme at the University of Sussex is exploring a radical new approach to climate governance: one that centres fossil fuel production.

🛢️We cannot lose sight of phasing out fossil fuels.

@freddiedaley.bsky.social and @peternewell.bsky.social have a piece in The National Interest pushing back on the “build now, break later” mantra in the energy transition.

A 🧵 on why that approach is risky👇
We Cannot Lose Sight of Phasing Out Fossil Fuels
Phasing out the use of fossil fuels, not just simply rebuilding low-carbon systems, should be the goal of COP30.

What does the International Court of Justice ruling mean for fossil fuel phase outs?
The world must phase out fossil fuel production to achieve the Paris Agreement. This isn't just a scientific demand, it is now a legal imperative.

What does the ICJ climate opinion mean for #FossilFuels?
According to the advisory opinion:
➡️Production, licensing & subsidizing of fossil fuels could breach int’l law
➡️Phase out standards vary with state capabilities

In a landmark opinion, the ICJ found that phasing out fossil fuels isn’t just a scientific demand—it’s a legal imperative.

IISD’s @nataliejones.bsky.social takes a closer look at what the court said on fossil fuels + what it could mean for efforts to phase them out.

Fossil fuel companies will try to sue states that ban new or existing production. When I speak with powerful actors in energy policy, this fear is a central concern in how governments think about the risks of phasing out fossil fuels. Here is an important intervention in how to reduce those risks:
🌍 Phasing out fossil fuels is essential - but what if governments get sued for it?

A new blog for SUS-POL from @iisd.org explores a crucial question for climate action. How can countries move away from fossil fuels without triggering costly investor lawsuits?

One of the most important dimensions of the climate struggle is a rapid phaseout of coal. Sometimes popular political pressure can be complemented by legal action – the case of South Africa shows how:
What can a courtroom do when a government vows to “aggressively pursue” new coal?
