I get that people arriving on small boats is a problem, it's a bigger problem for the people doing it. They have a significant chance of dying in the attempt.

But at a certain point besides committing horrific crimes there's not much more you can do to stop people attempting the crossing.

The conversations we have about the choices facing our country are consistently at the level of pre-schoolers.

I want a Porsche 911, I could probably borrow the money to buy one but I know that if I do that I face serious financial and social consequences. So I don't do it.

At some point the political and media class is going to have to level with people. Human beings are mobile, smart and determined.

If they decide that their future is better off in the UK they will find a way to get here either as irregular migrants or, if they have a claim, seeking asylum.

Every way you slice this data the UK is not recieving an outsized asylum claiment or resettlement number. We do not have a generous asylum system or welfare state comparatively to other european states.

The UK recieves the 5th highest asylum claims in Western Europe, Germany had 250 thousand asylum claims in 2024 compared to the UK's 108.

Adjusted for population that number falls to the 17th.

Basing your policy on a system that revoked refugee status for Syrian refugees who were fleeing from a regime that committed the worst atrocities of the 21st century and attempted to send them back is morally abhorrent.
