From Rousseau: a powerful critique of educational institutions, “fit only to make men double-faced, seeming always to attribute everything to others, but never attributing anything save to themselves.”

In each case, quite crucially, we see the child function as a surrogate to the slave—as the Other who must bend to “reason” through domination, a fantasy that continues to propagate through Western colonialization.

Another pernicious philosophy of education from this period conceives of the child’s natural state as one of “evil manners.” …Hobbes contended that children are without any “rule of good” except for “the correction they receive from their Parents, and Masters.”

We shouldn’t need to hear about the worst-case scenarios…to know that all forcible pregnancies and forcible childbirths are the products of sexual violence.

If children are imagined as having any agency at all…they are delegated with the impossible task of saving the planet. In this effort, youth are encouraged to focus on legislative demands—doing work for votes, in a system in which children have no right to vote.

a world that…renders their future more apocalyptic, and in which they are taught…that this is just inevitable. We make this hell normal, knowing that children will most likely live out something far worse, the terror of which we can only begin to recognize.

Doing so involves first reckoning with our own sense of possibility, and meeting the challenge posed by youth climate activists: that we stop “pretending that empty words will make the emergency go away,” and bring to an end the arrogance that enables this belief.

What is lost when we limit our political horizons to what is supposedly “realistic”? And who gets to decide what can and can’t be possible?

Re: “the youth will save us”

Whether as a talisman for hope or as a mere scapegoat for generational conflicts, the role of youth has, time and again, been overlooked—or worse, overwritten. We owe it to each other to show up together, in as many ways as possible.

How do we imagine a political movement that’s not “for the children” but actually w/ children & for our future? How can we make this imaginable not just in the abstract but in our everyday lives, in the ways we treat each other, make decisions together, and listen?

we were all brought here without our consent. As adults and children, as humans, we have this in common. That’s what it means to be born and to survive.

“In Michigan, we all prioritize our wildlife, our forests, our lakes, our freshwater. That’s sort of Michigan’s pride,” said Willow Lund, 17, from Kalkaska. “What are our other land options other than pulling down a forest?”
The kids are all right 🥲
