Working for an economy that serves people & nature (p4ne.org). Former Lib Dem MP, Minister and Leader. Love running, winter swimming, birds 🐦, plants 🪴 and my 3 boys.
Full of sadness to hear about the death of Sir Menzies Campbell, or Ming, as we called him. His incisive intellect made him a formidable debater, though he was unfailingly courteous and always a gentleman. He spoke with power, authority and moral clarity in opposition to the Iraq War. He was right.

Prof Dasgupta's review for the Treasury advocated thinking differently about the economy and nature. How to put it into practice? Looking forward to discussing at @green-alliance.org.uk event tonight.

“Last weekend, the world’s richest man closed down the world’s largest humanitarian effort, and no one ever voted for him.”
I felt it needed saying.
This morning @duncanhames.bsky.social spoke to MPs from the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee and set out our concerns that big money is distorting the central premise of democracy - equality of voice.

Here's some of what he had to say ⤵️

Terrific, terrifying, clarity of writing in the Guardian about LA wildfires:

"something climate scientists have been warning about for decades: compound climate disasters that, when they occur simultaneously, produce much more damage than they would individually"

As long as British politicians court billionaires, wherever they are in the world, the voice of ordinary voters will be muffled.
I called for an annual cap on political donations this morning on BBC Radio’s Today Programme.

Liking this analysis and concept of 'qualitynesia', feels true of lots of things, also related to the annoyance of built-in obsolescence and enshittification (which at least we may be more aware of).
This CD player was my birthday present in 1997 along with the incomparable Fresh Hits 1997. I found it recently and COULD NOT BELIEVE how rich the sound was, after years of streaming Spotify on my phone. My column today is about this phenomenon, which I’m calling “qualitynesia” on.ft.com/3ZlwHf5

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive
