Spatial biology + maths, finally starting to give up on The Bad Place
WE'VE ONLY GONE AND DONE IT!!!

(Apart from the two pieces that have sadly gone missing in the last 2.5 years 😅🥲)

@sergiosdhi.bsky.social takes to the #ESSB2025 stage to demonstrate TopROI, a new mathematical tool for preserving structure when dividing large point clouds into multiple regions of interest! #EMBLSpatialBiology

Great to see some exciting applications of #MuSpAn in action in @pathologop.bsky.social's talk at #ESSB2025 today!

Come and say hi if you'd like to find out more about the software, or to have a chat about how MuSpAn might be able to help with your data analysis :) #EMBLSpatialBiology

No photos, please!

We're exploring spatial biology at multiple scales here today - the auditorium is huge, but the powerpoint presentation is several orders of magnitude smaller

Some MuSpAn fun with @visualpde.com !
September 26, 2025 at 5:23 PM
(Not to mention some lovely @physicell.bsky.social simulations, of course!)

Lovely to have a talk on home turf from the great @mathcancer.bsky.social, presenting some of his developments around a grammar for developing agent based models!

If that sounds interesting, check out the paper here:

Great start to day two of #UKMathBio - after @profruthbaker.bsky.social's opening talk we now have Katie Bentley from @crick.ac.uk introducing us to the lunatic fringe hidden in the mouse retina...
September 5, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Great first talk of #mathonco session 2 at #UKMathBio from Alexis Farman, who has been modelling B-ALL
September 4, 2025 at 2:46 PM
We're back up and running after lunch - after David Rand's talk on the neural tube (which I forgot to get a photo for, sorry) we're now hearing about Weini Huang's work on ecDNA #UKMathBio
September 4, 2025 at 1:32 PM
Our final talk of the morning at #UKMathBio is from Nikolaos Sfakianakis, who presents some very cool (and slightly gruesome) modelling of a hybrid 3D framework to describe tumour metastasis
September 4, 2025 at 11:27 AM
Now time for @kitcgallagher.bsky.social on cool work with @mathonco.bsky.social on clinically applicable mathematical biomarkers using a Lotka-Volterra model #UKMathBio
September 4, 2025 at 11:09 AM
The first set of parallel sessions are kicking off now at #UKMathBio - this morning I'm in the #mathonco session, kicked off by Einar Bjarki Gunnarsson on optimal dosing strategies
September 4, 2025 at 10:53 AM
Next up at #UKMathBio is @gibin.bsky.social with our first foray of the conference into #mathonco, with hybrid ABMs modelling the bystander effect in radiotherapy
September 4, 2025 at 10:05 AM
Now Anne Skeldon is here to tell us how bad getting up at 6am to come to #UKMathBio was 😅 - Mathematical modelling of sleep for healthy human function in the 21st century

(We're only 13 minutes in but if you're interested in exploring approaches to linking imaging and modelling from another perspective then I'll put a cheeky plug in for my talk on www.muspan.co.uk tomorrow afternoon!)

First up at #UKMathBio is Tiina Roose, who makes a great case that maths can be central to every stage of experimental data collection, particularly imaging! #MathBio shouldn't just be an endpoint where we take fully processed experiments and model them completely separately from everything else

Packed room for the start of the first #UKMathBio conference - looks like the rain hasn't put people off the trip to Birmingham!
September 4, 2025 at 9:05 AM
Some big progress this week on the Wolfson Centre for Mathematical Biology's attempts to solve the puzzle of pattern formation! I'm starting to get more optimistic that it'll be #DoneByOctober @oxfordmathematics.bsky.social

It must be Monday.

Walked into the office today and noticed a sealion on the roof in the distance. That's the kind of thing that only happens before I've had my first cup of tea on a Monday morning.

It's been a while since I dipped into the wonderful world of Terry Pratchett, and I have to say the Unseen University definitely hits differently now that I've got a bit more experience of academia 😅

I couldn't make it to #SMB2025 this year, but my sources tell me #MuSpAn managed to make the journey over to Canada!

If you enjoyed Sergio's talk, do take a look at docs.muspan.co.uk and see if it'd be useful for your data / agent based models / anything else spatial that you've got lying around!
