That makes sense. I’m grateful that Seabury’s consecration got TEC the Scottish Eucharistic Prayer, but I’m glad that White was the more influential bishop for our church governance. (Although Seabury is the reason we have a bicameral General Convention.)

Sometimes we are really good at trolling ourselves.

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

We give you thanks, O Lord our God, for your goodness in bestowing upon this church the gift of the episcopate; and we pray that, joined together in unity with our bishops and nourished by your holy sacraments, we may proclaim the Gospel of redemption with apostolic zeal;

In TEC, the commemoration is technically the “Consecration of Samuel Seabury” rather than a commemoration of Seabury himself. I learned in seminary this was because Seabury was a huge jerk who tried to style himself “the Bishop of All America.” Today’s collect doesn’t mention him at all.

Season 4 of 3rd Rock from the Sun and Season 7 of 30 Rock for me. Although Community Season 3 is very good.

I joked my goal was to be good enough to be invited back but make just enough mistakes that the parish was glad the rector was back.

Exactly! I also never wanted to leave a mess as a supply priest. (I witnessed someone do that in my field ed parish!) But you sometimes don’t see the mess coming when you are supplying in a new place for the first time.

The number of times I asked a question as a supply priest about how a congregation did something and was told “the normal way.” 🤦🏻 The rectors who left clear instructions were such a delight to supply for!

My discretionary fund is audited! The audit committee doesn’t get the personal identifying information about the recipients of the funds, but I do need to demonstrate I’m using the fund appropriately. And this is a good thing!

Exactly. I do have grocery store gifts cards on hand, but these are the only things I give directly to people. I’m happy to help with rent/bills, but I ask for a copy of them, both as verification and for accountability!

We have Diocesan Convention in two weeks and I am dreading it. My back is spasming at the mere thought of the chairs.

From a budget/advertising standpoint I don’t know what else to do. We don’t have a local paper anymore, so it’s the only place to advertise. Meta feels less awful than X to me, but it’s very much the lesser of two evils still.

Genuine question: what do you use for church social media? The church page is the only thing keeping me on Facebook, but there is nothing else nearly as ubiquitous.

Right? The only reason I see to keep working past 30 years is to sort out health insurance. If retirement is still possible, I plan to retire.

It’s such a problem. A couple years ago CPG reported there were less than 200 priests under 40.

I once ran for office at convention and lost. The priest who won said it would be my turn in 20 years, at which point I would be 5 years from retirement age.

I have been one of the ten youngest priests in my diocese since I was ordained 13 years ago. Every time I’m about to come off the list, someone moves away. We don’t have any conversations on why we don’t retain younger clergy.
