On "Will the Circle Be Unbroken":
"The thing about an unbroken circle is that some people are always in it and some people are always out of it."
On "Wait 'Til I Get You Home":
"The song is doubly horny, conceptually committed to the horn."

Longtime enviably tattooed corridero duets with a bunch of dudes (yeah, all dudes 😥) from across the corrido spectrum, with furious chops and cavernous vocal echo effects the common musical threads.

Didn't expect to like this, but since I last heard her a decade ago, she's gotten catchier or I've gotten artier, maybe both. Beats, melodies, and mood remind me of Madonna's Ray Of Light album, and "Drums Of Death" is a banger.

Sarcator - Swarming Angels & Flies (Century Media)
Growly Swedish thrash, occasionally majestic, whose abundant blisteringly rad guitar parts make it catchier than you'd expect. And there's a melodic instrumental! ("Closure")

Expected this would be beautifully written and researched. Was delighted but not surprised by great critical passages on, say, Bing's debt to minstrelsy. Had NO IDEA how much I'd enjoy Giddins detailing the ridiculous plots of Bing's movies.

(besides all the Gary Usher/Roger Christian tunes, there are a couple solid Lieber & Stollers here, their "Chicken" is a real massacre)

Frank Beard is really good on this record - lots of busy, steady patterns, like anxious motorik. He's also got a sample-worthy funk break on It's Only Love, and his rustling shuffle on El Diablo is a wonder to behold.
