Jack DeJohnette RIP. Here he's in charge of shaping the live band arrangements, giving Lloyd's tunes the architecture and personalities that'll make those tunes live in people's minds on the ride home. His solo on Pre-Dawn rips, and his fills during the trio section in Forest Flower are thrilling.

Steacy Easton, everybody.

On "Will the Circle Be Unbroken":
"The thing about an unbroken circle is that some people are always in it and some people are always out of it."

On "Wait 'Til I Get You Home":
"The song is doubly horny, conceptually committed to the horn."

"I think the title is befitting" is perfect, no notes, but the whole quote really lays out Saliva's whole deal

3. Adriel Favela - Origen (Fonovisa)

Longtime enviably tattooed corridero duets with a bunch of dudes (yeah, all dudes 😥) from across the corrido spectrum, with furious chops and cavernous vocal echo effects the common musical threads.

FKA Twigs - EUSEXUA (Young/Atlantic)

Didn't expect to like this, but since I last heard her a decade ago, she's gotten catchier or I've gotten artier, maybe both. Beats, melodies, and mood remind me of Madonna's Ray Of Light album, and "Drums Of Death" is a banger.

THREAD: 2025 albums that are Worth It

Sarcator - Swarming Angels & Flies (Century Media)

Growly Swedish thrash, occasionally majestic, whose abundant blisteringly rad guitar parts make it catchier than you'd expect. And there's a melodic instrumental! ("Closure")

Song by song, the raddest examples of:

1. Mutually assured destruction rock
2. Execution rock
3. Hemingway rock
4. Anhedonia rock
5. Songs about being trapped under ice
6. Track 6's that refute track 4
7. Exodus rock
8. Closing metal instrumentals that could almost be closing disco instrumentals

Gary Giddins - Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams (2001)

Expected this would be beautifully written and researched. Was delighted but not surprised by great critical passages on, say, Bing's debt to minstrelsy. Had NO IDEA how much I'd enjoy Giddins detailing the ridiculous plots of Bing's movies.

choose your fighter, but you can't ALL be the Robert Mitchum moonshiner death ballad

(besides all the Gary Usher/Roger Christian tunes, there are a couple solid Lieber & Stollers here, their "Chicken" is a real massacre)

ZZ Top - Tejas (London 1976)

Frank Beard is really good on this record - lots of busy, steady patterns, like anxious motorik. He's also got a sample-worthy funk break on It's Only Love, and his rustling shuffle on El Diablo is a wonder to behold.
