I am sorry for your loss and understand how you may be feeling. We lost our maternal grandfather on Christmas day 2020. Didn't have a funeral until 2023. Christmas will forever be a reminder of a great man lost to COVID and Alzheimer's.

SmolLM on the other hand was different. I tried it first and it gave me what I asked for before prompting itself and answering that prompt about a completely unrelated topic. Also, I got 2 different answers depending on if I ended the prompt with a period or question mark.

Interesting results.

DeepSeek R1 distilled gave me it's reasoning before giving me what I asked for. (Should have seen this coming, it is a reasoning model.)

TinyLlama just gave me what I wanted.

2/2 I unplugged the HDMI for the tv from the graphics card. Low and behold, the desktop is now displaying on my monitor. Linux was booting, but was defaulting to the HDMI TV over the DP monitor. Thanks for kick-starting my brain.

@bakaunchi.bsky.social You were right. My computer thought there were 2 monitors because there were. I forgot that I had plugged my tv into my PC and mirrored my screen in windows when the roommate and I were finding a good AirBnB for when we go to a NASCAR race in September. 1/2

The Ryzen 5 5500 is an 5600g with the iGPU fused off, but you may have just solved my issue anyway. I will have to wait till I get home after work, but I am pretty sure I know what I did. If I am correct, I will explain how much I messed up in an update to this thread.

I am just using the iso download from the Kubuntu and PopOS websites. I am using Rufus to make the USB sticks. How would I check to see if I have proper display drivers?

My PC is a Ryzen 5 5500 and an AMD RX6600. It boots and I can see the Kubuntu wallpaper, but there are no desktop icons, no status bar at the bottom, and no start menu to do anything. I will have to use my phone to record the screen as I boot into windows and Linux to show what is happening.

I don't know what any of that stuff is for, but I am willing to learn.
