My major worry is that the unfunded and, what at times has felt like, rudderless approach to reform won't only make existing problems worse, but create entirely new ones.

Commissioning environment may be permanently scarred by the experience of staff and leaders in the past year.

Tax is how we resource the projects society benefits from as a whole. It's not a punishment its a patriotic effort towards common endeavour.

Social Democrats should be unafraid of making that argument. It's the argument we should have made in the 2024 election. But better late than never!

The government has one chance here to break its pledge, and do it in a way that fixes the social contract broken by Tatcher: we all pay in, because actually government is good at providing services, and yes those with more to give, give more.

I argued that the urgent security situation in March should have precipitated such a tax reform agenda. That urgent need has not gone away.

I know defence makes most socialists squirm, but honestly, until we start to take it seriously we'll always be beaten on it by the right and far right.

Income tax bands are too broad, Cap gains should equal income and there's a host of 'sin' taxes that could raise billions.

Wealth taxes on assets of the super rich would raise billions.

Alongside this, the outdated and ineffective council tax formula is strangling local gov. It needs scrapping.

I know there have been significant improvements in mainschool education around empire since I was at school (I am married to a history teacher) but my education in mainschool was so limited. Only doing my history degree did was I actually exposed to the reality Empire.

I'm one of those who believes that you have to work with the world as it is:

Where markets for UK debt are extremely volatile and our currency value has already dropped significantly in the past 10 years.

So all the debt is held by the bank of England, thats great news.

And now we can just finance spending through issuing currency! So glad the pound is still the international reserve currency, and everyone has the same interest in it keeping its value.

Phew thats solved basically all our problems!
