Thank you! I use an inorganic mix of mostly volcanic particles (pumice, perlite, lava with expanded shale), which helps to prevent soil collapse. I prefer a long lasting granular fertilizer containing micronutrients (there are many brands, I just look for what's generally on sale).

Thanks! And you're right that they do not bud back reliably. if you have longer branches and can't safely cut back to a shoot, it can also be grafted, either approach or scion grafts work well.
