Private sector cannot maintain debt for extended periods without fiscal deficits. If the foreign sector doesn’t have confidence then they won’t invest in US and private debt will indicate depth of recession.

What you’ve missed is the US reducing deficit spending which will strangle the private sector from the other end. This could drive the private sector to borrow to maintain positions which wouldn’t show up in credit data straight away. The illusion though would be a mounting disaster as …
