Wildlife tracks & sign, Alberta, Canada. Posting and reposting stuff about tracks and tracking
Elk incisor marking. Dominant female elk make these marks by scraping upward with the incisors of their lower jaw. It is thought to communicate dominance.

Vole eskers, tunnels, and latrine. Watch for these as snow recedes in grassy areas. #wildlife #nature #animaltracks #fieratracks #alberta #edmonton #yeg

Bear cambium feeding sign. They strip away large sections of bark, often leaving it hanging in strips, then they use their incisors (front chisel-shaped teeth) to scrape the tasty layer from the exposed trunk.

Raven tracks. The inside and middle toe kind of hug each other, while the outside toe pulls away. Birds that spend a lot of time in trees, like ravens, have a long backwards facing toe.

Some lovely red squirrel tracks found on my walk to work. The pattern left by all four feet is often misinterpreted as that of the single foot of a much larger animal — deer, wolf, even cougar. #wildlife #nature #animaltracks #urbanwildlife #redsquirrel #alberta #edmonton

Details of this porcupine trail are weathered away but the signature remains. A short, wide body shape, and short stature is evident. Look closely to observe an alternating pattern & a hint of sinuous tail drag. It’s beautiful.

To me, striped skunk trails always look as if they have a fifth leg that they use randomly— like there is always one more footprint in the frame than makes sense. #skunks #wildlife #animaltracks #edmonton #alberta #yeg #nature

These are river otter footprints. Five toes on each foot. Fronts are smaller than hinds. Webbing can be seen between the toes. Frequently travel in small groups. Easily my favourite track to find in North America. #wildlife #nature #riverotter #animaltracks #alberta #fieratracks
