Amen. Where the speech bubbles/captions go often determines my layout for the overall page. Sometimes they're the most prominent (and fun) design feature of the panel. I'd have no idea how much space to leave otherwise, and I'd hate for part of my art I'd taken time to draw to get covered up!

Good grief look at this beauty I picked up for SIX POUNDS! It's hard to capture in a photo but the cover has this lovely transluscent vellum dust jacket. Over 200 pages filled with greats new and familiar.

It gives the fullness of loose pencil and the precision of ink all at once. Almost makes the ink glow.

Evolution of another cover...
Rough sketch of cartoon animals, lead by an elephant with a little mouse atop his head, bursting through a line of Roman soldiers. A wolf and dog growl at each other in the foreground. Coloured artwork of the previous sketch, with the elphant changed from an Asian elephant to an African elephant. Same as the previous artwork but with the mouse now on the elephant's trunk and a Roman emperor clinging on top of the elephant's head. One of the soldiers who was being knocked back by the elephant has now been replaced with a gladiator. Final artwork where the emperor is now riding rodeo-style atop the elephant, who now also has great big eyebrows. The gladiator's armor has been adjusted and recoloured, along with other minor changes to colour and character position.

Evolution of a cover, for those who love seeing a bit of process as much as I do.

P.S. It's very hard to design a cartoon bee in the shadow of Jay Hosler. If you haven't read his "Way of The Hive" or "Ant Story" books, do yourself a favour. His cartooning is masterful and the way he gives bugs facial expressions with insect anatomy is genius. jayhosler.com/books.html
