In the times of AI, watching a creative process like this one elevates the value of the piece itself, it’s the result of intent and mastery, not shortcuts.
This is just beautiful.
In the second last week for my carbon dust course offered by the Lyme Art Association Natural Science Illustration Program, students had their choice of surface and subject for their final project. I joined them and illustrated a walrus skull which is still in progress #SciArt#CarbonDust #walrus

With all the AI slop flooding social media whenever there's an aurora, I wonder what that's doing to our sense of awe & wonder about what the natural world is *really* capable of?

Anyway - I'm glad to say both those images are absolutely real. I explain things here: bsky.app/profile/mike...
In January of 2021, photos started bouncing round the internet of this deeply weird thing happening in the sky above Glasgow, Scotland. Photoshop trickery?

The bizarre truth:
- yes, everyone really saw these
- no, they're not faked or manmade
- they absolutely don't exist.

We're lucky to work with a publisher who initially wanted speech balloons on a separate layer but graciously accepted that's not the way I work. I'd have no idea how to do it otherwise! It'd be like designing a wall mural without knowing where the windows, doors, pillars etc. will be.
My most strongly held comics opinion (I hesitate to say "opinion," because it's a fact): lettering should be the first finished thing done, not the last. Done after (or along with) roughs and finalized before pencils. Pencils and inking should be done AROUND the lettering.

It was this time last year that I was wholly distracted from pressing project deadlines by making this ragtag troupe. Currently resisting the pull to add new recruites...

This is only page 3 and I'm so invested in learning more from this author. Luddite as an insult certainly gets thrown around a lot these days, and I'm happy to have their concise clarification on what side of history that movement was on at the very start of the book.

Freelance/self-employed people: do you recommend "income protection insurance" for illness & accident coverage?

I hate the idea of paying into a hole each month if I don't need it... but also hate the idea of breaking my fingers and not being able to pay the bills.

If you desire such a thing, my full dissertation is a comic on prairie ecology, ethnobotany, and science history!

bsky.app/profile/chas...
The dissertation! 150 pages of prairie, history, & more pawpaws than you'd expect.

I've sold over 850 copies of this baby, and the world being what it is, it's far too expensive to print another edition right now.

Check it out in pdf form:

There is a new open access study of Roman ceramic tiles from Bracara Augusta (Portugal—Pleiades pleiades.stoa.org/places/236377) examining “420 prints from humans, dogs, cats, sheep & goats” left on the tiles.
