Although it may seem democratic on the surface, this development in Mexico is alarming. An independent non-partisan judiciary appointed on the basis of merit and not transient political considerations is essential for a well-functioning society based on the rule of law.

Trump is threatening to annex Canada. The last time the US invaded, in 1812, the Canadians (and British) fought fiercely and even burned down the White House. The war ended in 1814 with an agreement “to return to the state that had existed before the war and restore all conquered territory”.
