Former Stasi foreign intelligence chief Markus Wolf took to the stage and admitted the East German state was guilty of much, and that reform was needed.

The crowd weren’t exactly thrilled to hear from an establishment figure at this juncture. He was met with boos.

The Nazis extended Germany’s national bank and used it to store gold stolen from holocaust victims - including wedding rings and fillings - formed into gold bars.

The gold was then moved to a mine in Thuringia as the Soviets approached the capital in 1945. It was discovered by US forces.

Bit ostentatious tbh. I’ll keep my flat. Humble.

Which is how we ended up with sombrero time in 1968, when East German leaders Ulbricht (left) and Honecker (right) met with medal winners from the 1968 Olympic Games, held in Mexico City that year.

While this was the official office of East Germany’s leaders, most of the real work took place in the Central Committee (ZK) building next door. This one was mainly used for meetings and ceremonial events.

The Staatsratsgebäude, built in 1964, served as the official seat of East Germany’s head of state, housing the offices of the State Council and its chairman.

Latest YouTube is out and importantly features Ulbricht and Honecker in their sombreros.

More importantly, I take a walk through 1989 East Berlin (as it were) and tap away about a few buildings on a walk you can just as easily take yourself on - there’s a map in the video description.

I am once again asking Deutsche Bahn to turn the heating DOWN. We are, every single one of us using the S-Bahn, already dressed for outside. @deutschebahn.com pls 🙏

A little bit of bonus Cold War history behind the Reichstag. Part of the Gdansk Lenin Shipyard wall where the Solidarność movement started to gain traction in 1980. August protests that year were the beginning of the end for Poland‘s communist regime.

My theory is that every household has one piece of cutlery that its occupants hate. For me it’s this odd-shaped spoon. I hate this spoon.

Perfect light in the cemetery by Hallesches Tor the other day. Thinking of blocking next October entirely for filming 👀

This morning’s task was filming some additional footage of a book for my next YT video. Local dog wanted very much to be on the show 😂👇

It’s not only the Louvre that gets robbed in comedic fashion, you know?

In 2017 a baffling 100KG €1m CAD coin was robbed from the Bode Museum. The thieves here too stuck a ladder up to a window.

In this case though, 99.9999% pure gold loot was easily sold on…
