This work is a leading example of “zonism,” the painting concept created by Polish artist Leon Chwistek. In “Portrait of the Wife,” the artist divided the plane of the painting into geometric and colored zones. Similar shapes and colors are grouped into separate parts of the composition. In this way, each of it was dominated by a different color and a different form. The principle of zonism served Chwist to intellectually organize the composition. His approach to the painting, as a divisible plane, was partly due to his education. Between 1902 and 1906, the artist studied philosophy, psychology, and mathematics at the Jagiellonian University. After defending his thesis in 1906, he became a mathematics teacher at a high school in Krakow. The painting depicts Chwistek's wife, Olga Steinhaus, bright as the sun. Her figure occupies almost the entire left side of the canvas. She sits with her right leg on her left. She is wearing an orange blouse with a deep neckline, a yellow knee-length skirt and a yellow coat that also reaches the knees. When we look closely at the skirt, we will see that it was painted from yellow squares arranged evenly next to each other. She sits on cascaded green cuboid blocks which create a shape similar to stairs. The woman sits in a free pose with one arm leaning on the upper floor of the blocks, thus their arrangement brings to mind the shape of a bench or sofa. Olga smiles gently, looking towards us, with a round powder pink hat on her head. Behind her back, on the left side of the canvas, the branches of trees with leaves in a brown-red shade stretch along the entire length of the upper edge. The scenery resembles an autumn park. On the right side of the canvas, in the background, behind Olga's back stretches a city, built of pointed, navy blue forms. These two areas seem to fight each other, constantly push each other. Maybe, as sometimes we sit between changing moods?

I was determined to work on mounting some of my finished cross stitch pieces today. Spent an hour hunting for my x-acto knife. Got everything set out. Opened the box of foam board I'd ordered....not thick enough to use tacks in.

*sigh*
