I’ve been inching my way through this strange and beguiling book for a while. With all of Carrère’s work, you just go along for the ride.

Two weeks ago today up in the Peaks, Hope Valley. Amazing how luck works out on the bike, a long weekend of rough terrain and then I get a slice of glass through my tyre on the stretch of road back to my house 🫠

Off on my monthly commute into London, on my 6 year anniversary at @homelesslink.bsky.social!

I’ve got a really exciting digital project coming up this year - hope to share some of the journey on here 🙌🏻

Only one thing to listen to today … Richard Dawson is one artist who continues to amaze me with every new release.

This weather is so uninspiring, sometimes you need something to cut through the gloom.

I got out on my bike early doors yesterday - was worth making the effort to get out and onto the bike! I passed a man who said it was “the best fog” he’d ever seen 🤷🏻‍♂️

Some chapters more successful than others, but a really interesting dive into the ongoing influence of Paradise Lost. Reminded me of one of my favourite books of recent years, The Life Inside by Andy West, ultimately asking hard questions of what our vision for freedom is.

AM dog walk listening: Comradely Objects - Horse Lords. A great record for blowing off the cobwebs before a busy day.

Cutting through the misty morning.

AM and PM sky shots.

Didn't read as much as I would have liked last year as I was in head-down writing mode for a lot of 2024, but these were the things that I did read which chimed with me, some vaguely new and some vaguely very much not new.

I’ve settled somewhere about here with my albums of the year. My New Year’s resolution this year was to listen to new music and feels like I chose a bumper year to do so as there are so many records (Wendy Eisenberg, Godspeed, Shane Parish) that I love that didn’t make the list.

Bring on 2025.

I knew there would be more to come! Incredible that one of my favourite artists has dropped a record like this in mid-December.

Love that Bill Orcutt has called How to Rescue Things “Derek Bailey's jungle record but with Perry Como instead of drum n bass”

This is why you don’t compile your AOTY list too early 🫣

Late hazy, woozy, addictive additions over the last week or so: YATTA’s Palm Wine and Astrid Sonne’s Great Doubt.

Blasted two of my favourite Christmas albums on my dog walk this morning, the first plays of the season for both records 🎄

Myriam Gendron: Mayday

A slow burner, beautiful folk songs that have burrowed their way into my brain feeling eternally familiar whilst refreshingly new.

Nilüfer Yanya: My Method Actor

Effortless and confident, beautifully crafted pop songs wrapped in shoegazey tones.
November 28, 2024 at 9:07 PM
Ezra Feinberg: Soft Power

I read somewhere that Feinberg wanted this record to sound like a dream that could go on forever, and he just about nails that with this set of songs. An understated, quiet moment yet one that is elegant and propulsive in just the right measures.

Dummy: Free Energy

Sort of a baggy Stereolab set of psych-pop, with some My Bloody Valentine harshness thrown in for good measure.
November 28, 2024 at 7:04 PM
Fuubutsushi: Meridians

An album that very carefully unfurls, at times feeling like the tape is going to unspool and disintegrate, but Patrick Shiroishi’s saxophone teases out the yearning voice of the record. Listened to this on many walks and rambles.

Nala Sinephro: Endlessness

This is spiritual jazz, it’s the sound of infinity. But this isn’t an album to drift off to, it propels then calms and propels then calms in an enrapturing journey.

Jeff Parker & ETA IVtet: The Way Out of Easy

Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy was an incredible building and flowing exploration of a vibe, and this picks up where that left off. The members of the IVtet have all made great albums of their own this year, and here they all are, in one place.

Still House Plants: If I Don’t Make It, I Love U

Probably my album of the year. A fearless exploration of what a three piece “rock”/“art rock” band can be. US Maple channeled through pirate radio and UK Garage. Unlike anything I’ve ever heard.

Took this guy out early this morning in the cold to try and clear my head (and the lurking winter cold) before speaking at a webinar. He had some great thoughts on user-led design and digital transformation.
