It isn't always a lack of cognitive resources that prevent masking though. It can be sensory-motor differences which prevent masking.

I enjoy Derek's work, and have pulled out my tweed blazer, vests and ties.

Yes, definitely. And also sometimes autistic traits like repetitive behaviors can devolve into self-harm, or preference for routines can turn into rigidity that becomes anorexia or other disorders—due to lack of informed supports. All intermingled and we need research on THAT, not "treating autism."

So true. My son learned to reliably type at age 14, and was finally able to demonstrate his much higher receptive understanding (many years above his age). Can't wait for A. W.'s results!

Firstly, there's an inadequate evidence base to support judgements about the receptive language abilities of the nonspeaking autistic population. This demographic simply hasn't been a priority for researchers. It's something the Woolgar lab in Cambridge is trying to address.

When I read the writings of these grievance parents, I can't help but think they're begging people to disrespect and/or fear their children--which implicitly justifies mistreatment. It's as if they don't even want to understand their children.
