I've joined some Figma files in my day but nothing shocks me more when a designer uses EEE as their canvas color.

Discussed malm’s pipeline with 10-12 ppl yesterday.

Overall mood is resignation, reluctance to waste time with ineffective strategy.

Immediacy or urgency determines prioritization of social causes. Climate change too far away in geography and time.

Great book tho

My toxic ADHD trait is always raising the stakes.

Small gathering? Why not invite my whole social world instead?

Deadlines? Oh yeah I can get it done in a day.

Certain cheese and cured meats (imported?) were out of stock at my local Costco yesterday.

The “compete with China in AI” directive ruins any chance of IP protection and data sovereignty.

It’s war on terror 2.0.

It’s now a “matter of national security” that we take all your content.

i want our digital spaces to be like a neighborhood kitchenette: get fed a snack, help out with the dishes, and speak to a matronly or patronly or they-tronly figure about what troubles ail me.

How do you estimate, plan and coordinate a design initiative on a large technically complex product, with vague and potentially misaligned requirements

in a remote international team
with impatient stakeholders who have no desire to engage in interim design processes?

Tariffs won’t fix trade deficit because of USD hegemony

But maybe it painfully forces consumers into a more local-centric economy? Or breathes some new life into DIY/repair movements?

Agree that my/our political imagination is stunted.

Hungry for fictional & historical examples of alternative/cooperative/generative resistance
But so often their defeat depends on superheroes with special powers/tech, Bond-style operatives, or essentially just violence. Which (I think) makes it hard for us to see (in popular imagination) how we can excise this dangerous tissue.

Are there are good examples of other models—other stories?

& believe me there have been a ton of people, often led by Black women, pushing back on the idea of all-powerful engineers over the last 20 years, but the industry has disempowered critical people & disciplines (eg QA & UX) ruthlessly over that time

It’s worth exposing bloated foundations, yes.

But techno optimists fail to absorb that there is no “cheap tech fix” to international development. We can’t airdrop internet, computers, blockchain and expect development.

It requires resourcing communities, infra, institutions. That requires money

Americas test kitchen method:

- boiling water, short level (doesn’t cover 50% of egg)

- Add eggs

- 6.5 minutes COVERED (steam)
- Stop cooking with cold water
hahaha saved you a click (and 17 minutes)

transferring the eggs between two bowls, one of boiling water & one of lukewarm water, every 2 minutes for 32 minutes

no thank you, the regular method is good enough

Pahlka acknowledging the importance of federal gov improvement, and even the need for boldness.

We are in a rut. Wrecking crew is maybe needed but this period could still be quite bad.
