If I were not already of strong opinions concerning the subject of Taiwan 🇹🇼, the last week has only further radicalized me.

What a truly glorious city Taipei and its environs are!

Not a single Trump appointee on the US Appeals Court for the Federal Circuit (the court where the tariff case will go), fwiw.

If the tariffs are not based in law, do importers get refunds? Similarly, how long until the bond markets realize that there’s less customs revenue to offset big spending plans? 🤔

China's Jan-Apr trade surplus with the EU through hit a record $90B.

The rising imbalance fuels concerns that the bloc will become China's dumping ground if goods are increasingly diverted from the US.

EU leaders meet today to discuss this challenge and US retaliatory tariffs.

The House tax bill has provisions that disproportinately have negative impacts on immigrants.

Notable from a global standpoint is the 5% tax on remittances. The tax would not only hurt immigrants but also the countries that are most reliant on US remittances.

"Geopolitical risk is no longer a sidebar issue... It is a core business issue. The most forward-thinking companies are already acting accordingly. Some are establishing Chief Geopolitical Officer (CGO) roles to navigate the increasingly blurred lines between commerce and statecraft."

Mind you, all happening while consumer sentiment is at its lowest since 2022.

📊Interesting Chart: Consumer purchases in March rose to the highest in two years

Likely driving the trend? Consumers' anxieties about tariffs (mind you, this was before "Liberation Day").

What's next? Potentially even higher spending in April (released tomorrow), fueled by tariff & shortage panic.

Tariffs are certainly a challenge for all businesses relying on imports (especially firms like retailers that do so directly). But, small and medium-sized firms are particularly hard hit, if only because they typically lack the capital to manage significant volatility in the costs of imports.

Colombia is a top recipient of US foreign aid, and when the taps get cut off, aid from China quickly became far more attractive.

💸 US inflation rose 0.2% in April and 2.3% from a year earlier. "Core" inflation (excl. food & energy) was up 0.2% since March and 2.8% year-over-year.

There are no clear signs of an inflationary impact from tariffs *yet*, but it's still likely to materialize over the coming months.
