On January 8, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 was shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shortly after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board. Initially, the Islamic Republic denied involvement, blaming the crash on technical failure.

Tomorrow, the annual Munich Security Conference will start. Munich will briefly become the global capital of diplomacy, but I think it’s worthwhile to remember - especially right now - that Munich was also the site of one of the biggest diplomatic failures of 20th century.
