@kupfers @onterof I’ve not read a figure for the breakdown of who paid what, annoyingly.

@Saupreiss When your long distance rail system - like France - runs with an *average* of 80% of seats full, and 40% of trains fully booked... well then you totally do NOT want to see what happens when one gets cancelled! It's not fun.
November 22, 2025 at 8:38 PM
@Saupreiss Sure, same here. But having spent too much time not being able to travel *at all* because trains are sold out, I would still sooner travel on the floor than not at all.
November 22, 2025 at 8:38 PM
@onterof Do you have a source for the 2028 date? (that it's pushed back doesn't surprise me at all)
November 22, 2025 at 8:23 PM
@Saupreiss or offer alternatives to the comp res premium trains as Italy and Sweden do. And France doesn’t.
November 22, 2025 at 8:21 PM
@Saupreiss let people reserve seats, sure. Comp res, no. The best railways in Europe - Switzerland and Austria - don’t have comp res.
November 22, 2025 at 8:21 PM
@Saupreiss if you need to go Berlin - München tomorrow you can with DB. Paris - Marseille, good luck. And that’s not right for a public service.
November 22, 2025 at 8:15 PM
@Saupreiss Yeah. But if a train is public transport of last resort that’s crap.
November 22, 2025 at 8:16 PM
@Saupreiss You do until you need to travel on a day when every train is sold out. As is tomorrow‘s. And the day after. And you can’t get to your destination.

And just look at the insides of this. I 🥰 it. My grandfather - an industrial electrician - would be purring over this!

The joy of old audio kit: you can still make something of this

All I need is the right converter cable and I’m playing MP3s off an iPhone on a 1966 amplifier and some 1970s speakers 😀

Tip: if you don’t follow me, and come up with a reply guy answer to this… well, just don’t? Because I am writing this based on a lot of knowledge of all European railways.

@mschfr in Europa vermutlich etwas in Spanien.

And the amp: a working one is for sale on eBay for €800!

WHAT?

The turntable is Philips AG 2230, 1964-67. But I’m getting nothing from the motor here. Needs work https://hifi-wiki.com/index.php/Philips_AG_2230

This is the input 😀

@bovine3dom "too much investment in unproven technologies" (that happen to be made by French firms) could likewise have been on the list.
November 22, 2025 at 4:15 PM
If your response to this is "but France is sparsely populated", and you think that is an excuse, well no.

Even parts of France that are just as dense as non-urban Germany (around Tours and Poitiers, Hauts de France, Lorraine, the coasts of Bretagne) have a lousy train timetable by German […]

@anthrazit Apparently you're a reply guy. Because yes, I have been to Norway, because my work is to investigate all of Europe's railways, not that you'd bother checking, as you're a reply guy.
