Dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil Thursday night at the Stonewall National Monument in New York for the annual Trans Day of Remembrance, honoring the more than 365 trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse people estimated to have who lost their lives due to suicide and violence this year.

I never posted these photos I took a dozen days ago in Washington, D.C., when thousands of people marched through the streets of the U.S. Capital as part of a "Day of Action" across all 50 states. Today, May Day, more protests across the country. Go to the 50501 website for events in your location.

On my very first trip to NYC, in 1982, on spring break from the University of Missouri with a used Canon F-1 and some Kodachrome, I photographed these girls staging on West 46th Street for that year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The city, the country, the world and I were all so different then.
