I forgot how unsufferable the internet can be on April 1st.

If I’m watching a webinar on a technology, it better be technologists talking not marketers or sales people.

Starting learn a bit about @databricks.bsky.social today!

The time of death I see often is the same moment the dashboard is published.
if you work in #databs long enough your eyes eventually turn milky white and you are granted the clairvoyant ability to see the precise time of death of any dashboard you gaze upon

Each wheel is an Excel “database” and the frame is made up of a combination of VBA scripts and VLOOKUP. The gears are a decades old Access DB that no one understands.

One problem with all of these complaints, and data work in general, is that their impact is incredibly hard to quantify. So we’re left with anecdotes and feelings and trying to make crucial decisions without solid information
I see these same quotes almost every day on social media, but this was written almost thirty years ago. No amount of tools will solve for these problems, only a change in our practices.

Got that @scott.hanselman.com vibe going this year. Gotta love a great podcast with a massive backlog

What a brutal work week it's been (and it's only Tuesday).

Losing so many amazing coworkers has been sad and my heart goes out to everyone who was impacted by the #layoffs at #Cargill. We're losing not only talented people but wonderful human beings that I respect and make me enjoy coming to work.

Finally got my #bird feeders up over the weekend and had my first visitors, a nuthatch and a pileated woodpecker!

How many projects do you have going on simultaneously? What's a number that feels good and when does it get to be too much?

Watching a recording of @metabase.bsky.social’s Mapping webinar.

Love seeing Alex Yarosh show cool map stuff while also advocating for only using maps when it adds to the ability to communicate.

Just updated the #DNS entries and #NGINX config for an app I host for hobby projects. #ChatGPT was able to walk me through all the changes.

I found it great for step by step instructions and asking for clarity about my particular configuration!

Spending time learning has such a high ROI and, for me, is incredibly enjoyable. Managers of analytics teams need to encourage and make space for regular learning. The tools we use today are not going to last an entire career.

I bet well over 50% of business analytics can be done in Excel yet we chase the tools so much.

One reason I’m not terribly worried about LLMs taking over for analysts is that the hardest part of doing analysis is forming the right question.
