Wow... Amazing how many of us had to learn this lesson the hard way. I also remember the second or two of wondering why the command was taking so long before I realized my mistake and started slamming Ctrl-C repeatedly in horror.

Yeah that would be mine also. At around 2am after spending the whole day/night getting ready for a big demo that was the next morning I did a rm -rf ./* and thought I was in a different directory. That was a very bad night but I learned a valuable lesson and never repeated it in my 25 year career.
