Paramedic • Cop • Colorado Senate President • Accountant I did hard things because they were right, not easy. Recalled in 2013, still proud of the work. Writing “The John Morse Code” to spark better citizenship and honest leadership.

When political survival is on the line, do you follow conscience? I chose conscience over career—and paid the price. But the #gunsafety laws I ushered through in 2013 are still on the books. The question for all of us: What are we willing to stand for? #CivicResponsibility #Leadership #CourageToLead

Gun makers often market firearms in ways that put the public at risk—appealing to kids with cartoonish imagery, video game references, or images of children with guns. Like Big Tobacco once did, they aim to hook future customers and encourage parents to “start them young."

My story—the recall, the courage it took to stand up, the lessons learned—is being woven into "The John Morse Code," coming 2026.

If you believe in transparent leadership and want to be part of this journey, follow along. Your voice matters too.

Looking back, I have zero regrets. The #gunsafety laws we passed in 2013 still protect Colorado families to this day.

The fight for safer communities continues—will you join me?

If you think passing tough effective gun laws is hard, try picking out your child’s tombstone.

That’s much, much harder but something Americans are forced to do every day because of guns.

We know because that’s what we had to do.

My legislative focus wasn’t always on gun safety, but gun violence could not be ignored.

As a paramedic, police officer, and Senate President, I’ve seen the toll of gun violence up close. Passing Colorado’s gun safety laws cost me my job—but I have no regrets.

Mountains & Modern Politics: A Metaphor for the Climb
Navigating today’s political environment feels a lot like climbing a mountain. The path is steep, the air gets thin, and every step forward can feel like a battle against gravity itself.

Behind every law is a story. Ours began in Aurora and Newtown, and led to five new gun safety laws in Colorado. The fight for safer communities is far from over.

Even when the press or public overlooks the truth or moves onto the next headline screaming for attention, time and light on a subject eventually reveals the truth. That’s worth noticing. Read the whole story:

I'm proud that the gun-safety laws we passed will remain on the books despite my removal from office. Going forward, I hope that politicians and voters across the country will find ways to build on our successes in Colorado... Read this #Newsweek article from 2013: www.newsweek.com/2013/09/20/c...
Rampage. Regret. Repeat.
Can we ever stop the cycle? How one lawmaker lost his job fighting for gun control. And why he'd do it again.

The 2013 recall was more than an election—it was a test of our democracy. Using recalls as a weapon threatens every leader who dares to do what’s right. We can’t let intimidation win.

@crow.house.gov - thank you.
Donald Trump is threatening me with arrest and execution because I’m upholding my oath to the Constitution and standing with our troops.

It tells you all you need to know about this President’s disregard for the rule of law.

When I stood up for #gunsafety, I knew the risks. I said, “If passing these bills cost me my political career, that’s a small price to pay.”

I have no regrets—lives matter more than politics.

At age 14, I was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. (I've been told that only 2-3% earn that recognition at that age). 32 years later, another 14-year-old, Ben Wolman, heard my recall story in 2013 and wrote his award-winning 2014 Profile in Courage essay about it.

My folks gave me a moral compass, but it was in the push-and-pull with my three brothers and six sisters that my leadership, grit, and sense of fairness took root.

When folks learn I am the eldest of 10 children, they often ask what that was like.
It helps to understand that was probably where my core values developed. Life in such a large family is its own kind of apprenticeship.
