With the Oscars airing later tonight, my Oscar movie watch for 2024 is now in the books. Fell two short. Was not able to catch "The Boy and the Heron" or "Godzilla Minus One" at the movies and neither became available for streaming in time. I am looking forward to eventually seeing both. #filmsky

"Perfect Days" closes out the Best International Feature category for me. A man lives his best life as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. It's a very nice story about appreciating the little things around you from day to day and not letting the grind of life wear you down. 8/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"Perfect Days" closes out the Best International Feature category for me. A man lives his best life as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. It's a very nice story about appreciating the little things around you from day to day and not letting the grind of life wear you down. 8/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"The Zone of Interest" is nominated for Best Picture, International Feature & several others. About Rudolf Hess & his wife living their lives next to the Auschwitz camp during WWII. My least favorite Best Picture nominee. Not interesting but the final images are powerful. 3/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"American Fiction" is up for Best Picture (plus four others). A black writer who's spinning his wheels decides to write the most stereotypical "black story" to prove a point. "American Fiction" is up for Best Picture (plus four others). A black writer who's spinning his wheels decides to write the most stereotypical "black story" to prove a point. It's a great setup with some very funny & touching scenes, but falls a little short on the payoff. 7/10 Pineapples #filmsky 📽️
"The Teachers' Lounge" is nominated in the Best International Feature category. A teacher catches a colleague stealing which leads to unexpected consequences. Film ratchets up the tension as the situation spirals out of control. Another excellent one in a loaded category. 8/10 Pineapples #filmsky 📽️

"Killers of the Flower Moon" is nominated in multiple categories including Best Picture. It's the true story of murder amongst the Osage nation in the 1920's. Yes it's long but I agree with Martin Scorsese, it was all necessary. Incredible story told by a master storyteller. 9/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"Invincible" is the true story about the last days of a troubled teen. It's nominated in the Best Live Action Short category. This is another good one amongst a collection of very solid nominees. So much happens in the span of just 30 minutes. Very focused and moving. 7/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"Past Lives" is nominated for Best International Feature Film & Best Original Screenplay. Two childhood friends reconnect years later as old feelings & memories resurface. So well written, though there is also much conveyed in what isn't said. I really enjoyed this one. 8/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"20 Days In Mariupol" is the horrific account of a team of journalists trapped in Mariupol when the Russian invasion begins. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Seeing the atrocities committed in Ukraine this close up is absolutely heartbreaking. It's a tough watch. 9/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"Robot Dreams" is nominated in the Best Animated Feature category. It's about a lonely dog who builds a robot to have a friend. It's a premise that I think would have worked much better as a 20 minute short. There are some laughs but so much that happens feels like padding. 4/10 Pineapples #filmsky

"The ABCs of Book Banning" received a nomination in the Best Documentary Short category. Most of the doc involves school kids reading from banned books & explaining why they shouldn't be banned. It's fine but I would have preferred more on the fight to keep them in schools. 6/10 Pineapples #filmsky
