These strikes may not compel an immediate settlement, as the ongoing struggle for a first contract demonstrates, but they help build internal solidarity and external support against the supposedly progressive company. Interviews with Starbucks union activists revealed that they organized 'alternative' (non-indefinite) strikes as a way to engage in industrial action at the point of production despite their low structural power. They also help uncover the strengths and weaknesses of these alternative strike forms.

From 2021-2023, workers organized more 'fixed duration' strikes than indefinite work stoppages. Considerable variation exists by industry, as f.d. strikes accounted for ~89%, ~77%, and ~69% of strikes in accommodation/food services, health care, and information; but only ~6% in manufacturing.
