I hated those days at Borders. Trying to explain that we couldn’t give away an Oprah hyped cancer memoir, but were handselling tons of a new YA book to Twilight readers and that not being good enough.

Both books deal with finding communion with our history, with a sense that there’s something greater out there. For David it’s his Sodomy Gods, for Blair’s characters it’s The Great Goddess Mother. In both books music is a HUGE gateway to those deities.

And Disco Witches of Fire Island celebrates all of those moments in such a moving way. There’s a strong through line between it and David Lauterstein’s memoir, Sodomy Gods. How do you dance and find joy when the world is burning around you?

It feels like the universe was steering me toward this book somehow. The dance floor is a sacred place to me. It’s one of the first places I felt a sense of queer community. It’s where I met my husband. It’s where I cried in PTown this summer, in awe of the queer joy around me.

A month ago I started a deep dive of Donna Summer’s music, & I’ve had Another Place In Time on repeat. This Time I Know It’s For Real was my December most played song. This afternoon I listened to it and On The Radio while running an errand. They appear back to back at a pivotal moment in the book.
