Yes, I of course knew about the rise of the BUF in the 1930s, although the size of the rally in that photo does surprise me.

My questions stands : how much did people in Britain and America think that Fascism could take control here? I'm guessing that the focus was more on Communism.

Agreed. But it's hard to know where in the world it is not endangered. Did it feel like this in Britain and America in the 1930s or was Fascism something that was only happening "over there?"

Hang on, when did staring at your phone become so performative?

Several people were doing it on the bus this morning. Show offs!

The calendar? Or the transnational corporation that I am about to form to market this product?

Quite honestly, it eludes me why no one has come up with a chocolate filled calendar for Counting the Omer. The 49th door could reveal a miniature cheesecake. I can see no hallachic impediment, can you?

Is he saying that not one of the NYPD are religious? Is he besmirching NYC’s Finest as Godless? Shocking behaviour. Who is this man anyway?

I don't think "moral collapse" is an exaggeration. Using X as training data to provide the standard of appropriate content would be like sending soldiers to observe the SS or policemen to shadow officers of the Stasi to learn about human rights.

Who could forget “I could be so good for you” sung by Dennis Waterman?

Is that, the introduction itself, written in Tyrolean dialect?

Quite incredible how many variations of German there are, and more still that Asterix has been translated into them. I wonder if there's any other language-dialects translations? Italian perhaps? Flemish and Dutch, thought I wouldn't dare suggest that those are dialects of the same language?

Very nice photo, but what I really want to know about is what the books are behind you. Are they rare books which have been re-covered?
November 2, 2025 at 6:01 PM
I think the translators of the series are the unsung heroes. This from the English translation by Anthea Bell of "Asterix in Switzerland" references a British beer combination that is now sadly lost in the mists of time.

I'm not sure I have ever read a book that has influenced me more than "Man's Search for Meaning."

Really! Even Google AI can work this out!

You just have to ask, "Are we talking about the Charleston-20s or the King Charles-20s?"

Fascinating, thank you! And I sampled the delights of Apfelwein (along with "musical cheese") in Frankfurt.
