I think the translators of the series are the unsung heroes. This from the English translation by Anthea Bell of "Asterix in Switzerland" references a British beer combination that is now sadly lost in the mists of time.

I had the same idea although I haven't attempted this actual book yet.
But what I found fascinating was that the bookshop in Berlin where I bought it had some Asterix titles with a different coloured spines. Turned out these were translated into the Berlin-German dialect, which blew my mind.

I am very concerned at the number of pubs I have visited recently where the staff have never heard of Ginger Wine.
Have you heard of it? Have you tasted it?
What about Whisky Mac? Did he die in vain?

Thank you for posting this. It seems strange at first that the name Noach appears to be repeated on the same line, until you see it in a modern printed version.

Some of my colleagues came back from leave and now it’s like Christmas has come early to the library tea room.

I'm still kind of amazed at this three and a half kilo honeycomb on sale at my local Turkish supermarket. I'm almost tempted to buy one, and cut it into smaller pieces and give it to people as birithday presents.

I don't believe this weather forecast at all. The BBC are just hedging their bets, aren't they?

I can't find the recording but the record in Hansard is funny enough. Although according to one site, Tam Dalyell never said these words.

Went to see 'Out of the Past' for the first time at the wonderful Garden Cinema in Holborn.
Fantastic film but with so many plot twists, by the end I had very little idea what was going on.

Just saw these so-called "Nice" biscuits with milk chocolate coating. This is a TRAVESTY of what this great biscuit should be.
I hope the municipality of Nice takes action through the European Court to force M&S to remove the name (or the chocolate) invoking its appellation d'origine contrôlée.

It could possibly be Enoch. This from the introduction of the Matthew Black translation (1985) -- I'm assuming 'Ethiopic' is a colonial term for Ge'ez. Not clear to me yet whether it was originally written in Aramaic, Greek or Ge'ez.

That's very kind of you, but no need. I found an article in Tablet

Particularly interesting to me is that the only surviving full text of the Book of Enoch is written in Ge'ez.

I came across this quotation via Rabbi Joe Wolfson on a podcast. It's blisteringly inspiring. I hope that someone out there agrees...

So, the people working on Grove Vale found out that, guess what? Water mains run underneath London streets. I mean, who knew? @elliereeves.bsky.social @transportforlondon.bsky.social @lb-southwark.bsky.social
