Enjoyed reading about Maggi Hambling’s penchant for Special Brew in this week’s @observeruk.bsky.social’s On My Radar. I’ve had the signature cocktail at Larry’s. It was absolutely divine. Planning on the ‘Francis Bacon Orange’ next time.

Ridiculous and profound I loved everything about the latest revival of Christopher Arden’s production of Handel’s comic opera Partenope at English National Opera. The glorious baroque music set in 1920s Paris surrealism. The design, costumes and choreography. And superb performances all round.

Absolute stunner of a concert from the legendary father of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke and fabulous band at London’s HERE at Outernet tonight. Rhythm section (including the amazing John Edwards on double bass) just phenomenal. Contender for gig of the year.

Whatever else, I’m loving the New Order Blue Monday references in this morning’s @politico.eu’s ‘London Playbook’. (Oh, and there’s a Leonard Cohen one too.) Well done @andrew-mcdonald.bsky.social & @bethanymrd.bsky.social. Full newsletter here: www.politico.eu/newsletter/l...

On a dull, damp day I so enjoyed the David Hockney ‘Some Very, Very, Very New Paintings Not Yet Shown in Paris’ exhibition at the new Annely Juda Fine Art space in Hanover Square. Colourful and humorous as you would expect but make sure to go upstairs to ‘The Moon Room’. Free until 28 Feb 2026.
