b) bsky.social is free for everyone who can't afford that
If somebody is in need of verification and doesn't have $0.83 to spare every month, I'd personally like to see a charity set up on its own domain to facilitate that. I'd contribute to it even.

That's fair. I guess my point is that "it's easy, just block these words" doesn't help if that's offensive in its own way (eg by blocking "do" in Chinese). It's a nuanced problem that needs to be addressed immediately but in a way that recognises that nuance.

The Chinese list contains 幹, which can mean the f-word but also is an extremely commonly used word meaning "do".

That list contains the word "dick", aka a name that a lot of people are called. Also, in addition to the word "sex", they added "gay sex" just to be sure.
In Japanese it contains the word "itazura" which literally means prank, and is no ruder than the word "prank" in English.

My point is that POTUS.whitehouse.gov is a lot better than POTUS.bsky.social, and "@POTUS (verified by SMS)".

You can get a free subdomain handle of, for example, bsky.london, for free (by going to that site). I can imagine services like this in the future, both free and paid, providing either vanity names or "trusted" verified status.

Half-way there, but all the NY Times employees I can find are still subdomains of bsky.social. If they had name.nytime.com, we'd know they are who they say they are because that subdomain is controlled by NY Times.
