I genuinely love that Heated Rivalry has become a national source for pride. So much so that the tourism boards for Canada, Ottawa, and Kamloops (as well as Langara College) are fighting for the affection of Hudson Williams / Shane Hollander.

I haven’t seen gas in Calgary fall below one dollar per litre since the time before COVID. It genuinely was shocking to see driving up to the pump yesterday.

Whatever the politics regarding vaccines in this province. I still found some time in my day to get my flu shot and COVID boosters. (Although it still sucks Albertans have to pay for them now)

It was heartening to learn that teens in the Calgary neighbourhood in Falconridge, are showing solidarity with the brave teen Evan Li, through some much needed good trouble. If Mr. Li never had any political ambitions in the past, he definitely has a strong future for him in government.

It was Pride yesterday in Calgary. It is also close to back-to-school. Working at a library, it angers me that rather than increasing classroom sizes, the Alberta government decided it was more important to ban books from public schools for being queer content. It shows how Pride matters in Alberta.

To think that over twenty years ago, LGBT couples in Canada could not get legally married. In Alberta, we had to (shamefully) wait until the federal government passed the Civil Marriage Act, which legalised same-sex marriage across the land. How far we have come as a society and a culture!

Quel immense progrès notre pays a accompli !

Happy birthday my cherished Canada. Over its illustrious history, we constructed a country that proudly sees itself as a cultural mosaic. A nation of nations – rooted in tolerance, fairness, diversity, democracy, and human rights. Never the fifty-first of anything. The true north strong and free.

The recent Australian and Canadian federal elections demonstrate just how Trump is reviled among the United States’ allies. After his inauguration, the incumbent Labor and Liberal governments were to lose to their conservative oppositions. In three months, the narrative flipped for the status quo.
May 6, 2025 at 10:22 PM

Also worth highlighting. This grear zinger by Althia Raj @althiaraj.bsky.social to a liberal partisan's political commentary : "...and also Arif, pretty soon people won't be able to vote, so you don't need to convince them to vote for you!"

Rewatching the CBC Canadian federal election results and I stumbled on this funny (and underappreciated) joke by David Cochrane @davidwcochrane.bsky.social : "...to the delta of 17 that they need, and it might actually include Delta, which is a seat they hold in the Lower Mainland."

What a difference a decade has made on my political preferences. I was on the extreme, progressive end on social issues when I was 18, to a moderate, centrist at the age of 28. Despite this, I am still a diehard social democrat on socioeconomic issues. The champagne socialist legacy lives on.
April 24, 2025 at 8:39 PM

Since I could vote, I’ve always voted New Democrat. Whether provincial or federal, my values and beliefs always leaned to the centre-left. However, Trump’s bellicosity has me blushing red. I switched my vote for the Liberals, because I think they have the best chance of defending Canada.
April 21, 2025 at 6:19 PM

What an endearing moment of political consensus. Whether a Grit, a Tory, a Dipper, or a Bloquiste, we can unite under a shared hatred of American strawberries. #leadersdebate

#debatdeschefs

It's nearly midnight in Alberta, and the threat of American tariffs becomes more and more a reality. I'm quickly realising how difficult it'll be to buy Canadian – or, at the very least, avoid American. The stickers at my local supermarket even throw me off.
