Hi, it's me, EarthQuake from Polycount. I'm a 3D artist and I do product design at Marmoset. I know things about normal maps. My special interests are cameras, woodworking, and moss.

Update: the neck exploded while I was trying to hollow it out. It decided it didn't want to be a weird little vase, what it actually wants to be is a weird little jar.

do you have anything that will encourage fox spirits to come to my shop and help me build stuff out of wood - if they can do some light blacksmith work that would be good too but I would have to get a forge so I dunno if that's in the cards

Progress on the Japanese-style laminated knives. 5 different species of wood used here - ironwood, manzanita, walnut, ribbonwood, and boxelder (maple). Putting a wooden knife into a sharpening jig has to be one of the goofiest things I've ever done

Update on this guy with the first coat of oil on. I decided to do a single bevel aka chisel edge on this one. I’m not happy with the edge yet - it’s chipping out a bit when I sharpen it, so I may need to adjust the angle. The next one will have a double bevel.

Good stuff! I went with a similar design, but added a taper since most of my chisels have a tapered ferule.

Here are a couple in more of a western style, with a solid ironwood blade and ribbonwood for the handles

I'm attempting to make some knives entirely out of wood. I'm using super hard, tight-grained wood as an experiment to see how sharp of an edge I can get. Of course, it won't stay sharp like metal but it should be a fun experiment. The first set will be Japanese style with separate handles.

The boxelder came from this section of the root, I dug out as much as I could and got in there with a chainsaw with a carbide chain. This section had the best figure of the tree, if I had the means to pull the root ball out I would have but it was too big for me to manage.

Not a root ball per se but the previous owner left a bunch of Russian olive logs on the property, some had really nice burl and I got a few great blanks from that. Alder probably turns nicely, cedar might be a bit tricky due to how soft it is.

Making a lil vase guy from some boxelder root burl. Next we’ll see if I can hollow it out without it exploding.

Nicely done! These knife kits are a ton of fun. Here's a couple I made with mallee and boxelder burl

The dovetails for the legs were the most complex bit to cut. Here are some work-in-progress shots.

Walnut with crotch figure and hand-cut curly maple bowties. There were some voids and cracks that I filled with black epoxy.

I used the piano stool kit from Lee Valley to make the side tables go up and down. There’s a threaded rod clamp at the bottom that allows torques against the legs and keeps the table from wobbling when raised. It also works as a depth stop so you can set how high you want it to be.

In addition to nerding out about Japanese tools sometimes I make stuff. Here's a coffee table set with adjustable height side tables that tuck in for storage. Made for @noodleverse.bsky.social

Most Japanese chisels use a laminated construction with a layer of hard steel forged to soft iron. This makes it easier to sharpen and the soft iron helps to make the tool more durable - the hard steel layer being relatively brittle on its own. These use Hitachi white paper steel #1.

The bevel angle has been established with a jig and honed to 8000 grit and now the tool is ready to use. Both the back and bevel must be polished to create a sharp edge - if the back is left rough, the edge will be serrated and the chisel won’t cut well.

The handles were in good shape, so I cleaned them up and put a coat of linseed oil finish on. If the finish has worn off or they are stained I will sand and completely refinish the handles. The handles are stamped with the mei of the handle maker.

Tataki style or striking Japanese chisels, meant to be hit with a genno or metal hammer, have a hoop at the end of the handle to keep the wood from splitting. I knocked off some rust and reset the hoops - mushrooming the end to keep them from coming off.
