Mardy northerner stuck down south complaining about all the birds he dips.

For my artwork, check my insta: joesargeart
Still on the fence as to whether these are golden or grey plovers. The beak and bird looked too dainty to be grey but beak looked too long to be golden and body too grey.

RSPB Birders fbook page useless cause I'm not asking them to ID a sparrow

Look at all these YLGs in amongst the GBBGs, in Normandy of all places! The YLGs favoured the salt marsh in large numbers while the beach was full of herring gulls

Gros Banc - Normandy was as dead as I expected, but did manage some barwits and happy to find an osprey. These plovers that seemed too long-billed & silver to be golden but not strong-billed enough to be grey, with their prominent supercil caused much confusion before I decided they were just golden

Personal seawatching stations on the Guillaume of Normandy crossing! Praying for a sleepy baby 😂

Bogey slain after all this time!!! 3 CURLEW SANDS with 2 dunlin at cheddar reservoir today along with 7 glossy ibis, 1 little stint, my first 3 knots of the year, 2 common sands, 2 blackwits and loads of ruff.

Here's one from the vault from before I knew Merlin existed - help appreciated! Camargue in April 2022. I hear corn bunting and, I think, crested lark. I recorded it hoping it would be crested rather than skylark and definitely don't hear skylark.

Nice to see Aztec West's No Mow Zone is a great success

Just had a giant one of these in my kitchen. Is this cause for excitement?

From the archives: Andalusia in 2023. Cirl buntings, rock buntings, tons of vultures and a black-eared wheatear. Can't wait to get back to Iberia one day

Awful photos but think this is a cinnabar moth on Horfield Common

Holy shit! Must be an ant day

Finally uploaded by Exmoor photos to my laptop. Here's the dodgiest photo of a whinchat ever and some actual decent ones of dartfords

I pretty much make an annual pilgrimage to the Somerset Levels to see garden warblers. I usually hear them before this but the levels is almost guaranteed to see them. <5 minutes after I parked, here's one perched singing

Serendipitous decision to walk from the BnB up to Dunkery Beacon, then taking an alternate route back down where I stumbled across what has become a mythical moorland species for me (saw much better than pics imply), plus ANOTHER dartford!

2 willow warblers having a sing-off by Selworthy today. One of the best sounds of the summer.

Right after seeing some dartford warblers perform. Didn't even know they still bred in Exmoor!

15 whimbrel came in and landed on the back pool at Pilning. Also a small group of 10ish summer plumage dunlins, 2 avocets, 10ish common ringed plovers and more little ringed plovers than I could count. 1 marsh harrier over Aust warth.

Still ticking off bucket list items of normal birding experiences after years of doing this. Seen lots of lesser whitethroats in my time but never heard 1 sing until this 1 serenaded me today on the path at Pilning Wetlands. Even showed briefly

Lunchtime walk to Badock's Wood brought up at least 2 singing blackcaps and this bird call that neither Merlin nor I could ID!

Highlight was accidentally flushing 2 stock doves from their nest hole right by the path

Only took me 2 months to use my new desk setup. Only bird I've drawn so far this year, Mr. Kingfisher

My feeder has its first ever visitors, still casing the joint!

Birdsong picking on a walk at Stanton Drew this morning with the rare opportunity to hear this mistle thrush in full song. The green woody couldn't resist getting involved too at the end.

First singing chiffchaffs of the year too!

A species that managed to evade me last year (didn't bother going out specifically to look for them): sanderlings on a French beach near Boulogne on Monday. Possibly my favourite wader. They're so tame!
March 5, 2025 at 9:31 PM
A walk in a local forest here in Normandy produced tons and of marsh tits as usual. A lot of them were singing, which I'd never heard before. Some great titish, some like their sneezy call, but this one had the most interesting song

Water rails really are like buses. Can go a whole year only hearing them squeal and then Slimbridge a week ago I got the best views I've ever had from Willow hide and ANOTHER one waaaay out in the open en route to the Kingfisher hide

Is this just a common gull on cheddar res today? Noticeably bigger than Black-headeds but very long, deep bill for a common
