My job is to play hillbilly music for folks who don't know they love it yet.
On a break from mixing my new record with April Verch.

My cousin Eva Jane Johnston has passed away at the age of 88. She was a combination of my mother and her fine sisters - sharp, smart, and funny, with a beautiful laugh. Her twin Flo Jean passed away four months ago, and now they are together again... It was the longest they were ever apart.

Coffee Diem. This coffee tumbler was made by a friend of mine who likes to use my image when he is testing out new products. It is a one and only mug!

The old Judge in his lair. That is the father of my youth, right there. On Saturday, he will be gone 14 years.

This holiday season, I am resolving to buy from folks close to home whenever I can. There is a lot of talent and creativity right around the corner. And, don't forget those gift certificates to your favorite restaurants.

Thinking of my dad, James S. Newberry, on Veterans Day. Enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor. Overseas for 3 years. North Africa, Sardinia, Sicily, Italy, and France. Won enough money playing poker on the troop ship home to pay for college and all of his law school. Best man I ever knew.

It is the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. This is my uncle, John B. Newberry. A member of the Raider Battalion during World War II, he was in the Pacific for 3 years...Enlisted at 18 and home at 21. That Raider patch on his arm was worn by only a few. Semper Fi.

I had a great time doing a session at Ashokan Banjo Weekend on Hobart Smith's tune "Wabash Blues." Izaak Atlas Schwartz, along with the rest of this class, was a joy to teach. youtube.com/shorts/Z4IWF...

Thinking of my late friend Dwane Powell on what would have been his 81st birthday. His work was a fixture in the News & Observer, and this is likely one of the last cartoons he ever did. It is one of my most prized gifts.
